Most companies optimize for 20-40 search queries where they are already winning, missing hundreds of high-value queries where competitors have not yet established dominance. Finding these gap queries requires understanding query intent patterns, analyzing what competitors appear for versus where they have neglected, and identifying high-commercial-value queries with minimal competitive AI presence. These queries represent your best opportunity for rapid visibility establishment.
I discovered this the hard way. I spent months optimizing Loamly for "AI visibility tools" and "GEO tools"—queries where established competitors already dominated. I ranked well, but I wasn't appearing in ChatGPT or Perplexity. Then I started analyzing competitor gaps and found 50+ high-value queries where nobody was appearing. I optimized for those instead. Within 6 weeks, I was appearing in AI responses for queries my competitors weren't even targeting.
The Gap Analysis Framework
Step 1: Identify your competitors
List 5-10 companies that compete with you directly. These are companies that:
- Solve the same problem
- Target the same audience
- Appear in the same search results
Step 2: Test competitor queries
For each competitor, ask ChatGPT and Perplexity:
- "What are the best [competitor category] tools?"
- "How do I [problem your product solves]?"
- "What tools help with [use case]?"
Document which competitors appear and which don't.
Step 3: Identify gaps
Look for queries where:
- Your competitors don't appear
- The query has high commercial intent
- The query matches your product's value proposition
Step 4: Prioritize opportunities
Rank gap queries by:
- Commercial intent (how likely is someone searching this to buy?)
- Search volume (how many people ask this?)
- Competitive difficulty (how hard is it to rank?)
The insight: Most companies optimize for queries where competition is highest. The winners optimize for queries where competition is lowest.
15 High-Value Gap Queries (AI Visibility Category)
Here are 15 queries I identified where competitors weren't appearing, but the queries had high commercial intent:
Category 1: Problem-Specific Queries
1. "How do I track ChatGPT traffic in Google Analytics 4?"
Why it's a gap: Most AI visibility tools don't focus on GA4 integration. They build their own analytics. But marketers want to see AI traffic in their existing GA4 dashboard.
Commercial intent: High—someone asking this is actively trying to solve a problem and likely to pay for a solution.
Competitive presence: Low—established tools don't appear for this query.
2. "Why is my direct traffic increasing but I'm not running campaigns?"
Why it's a gap: This is the exact problem AI visibility tools solve, but most tools don't optimize for this query. They optimize for "AI visibility tools" instead.
Commercial intent: Very high—this is a frustrated marketer who has identified a problem and is searching for solutions.
Competitive presence: Very low—nobody appears for this query.
3. "How do I know if ChatGPT is recommending my brand?"
Why it's a gap: Most tools focus on "tracking AI traffic" but don't answer the specific question "is ChatGPT recommending me?" This is a more specific, higher-intent query.
Commercial intent: High—someone asking this is evaluating whether they need an AI visibility tool.
Competitive presence: Low—established tools appear for broader queries but not this specific one.
Category 2: Comparison Queries
4. "What's the difference between AI traffic and direct traffic?"
Why it's a gap: Educational content that establishes authority. Most competitors focus on product features, not education.
Commercial intent: Medium—educational, but people who understand the difference are more likely to buy.
Competitive presence: Low—few tools create educational content about this distinction.
5. "AI visibility tools vs SEO tools: which do I need?"
Why it's a gap: Comparison queries get 32.5% of AI citations. This specific comparison isn't covered well.
Commercial intent: High—someone comparing tools is evaluating purchase.
Competitive presence: Low—most tools don't create comparison content.
6. "How is GEO different from SEO?"
Why it's a gap: Educational content that positions GEO as a category. Most competitors don't explain the category—they just sell products.
Commercial intent: Medium—educational, but establishes thought leadership.
Competitive presence: Very low—almost nobody explains this distinction clearly.
Category 3: Use Case Queries
7. "How do I track AI traffic for my SaaS product?"
Why it's a gap: Use case-specific. Most tools optimize for generic "AI visibility" but not specific use cases.
Commercial intent: High—specific use case = high intent.
Competitive presence: Low—established tools appear for broader queries.
8. "What AI platforms should I monitor for B2B marketing?"
Why it's a gap: Industry-specific. Most tools don't optimize for industry-specific queries.
Commercial intent: High—industry-specific = high intent.
Competitive presence: Low—few tools create industry-specific content.
9. "How do I optimize my content for ChatGPT citations?"
Why it's a gap: Action-oriented. Most tools show you data but don't tell you how to optimize.
Commercial intent: High—someone asking "how do I" is ready to take action.
Competitive presence: Medium—some tools create optimization content, but not enough.
Category 4: Problem-Solving Queries
10. "My brand isn't appearing in ChatGPT—what's wrong?"
Why it's a gap: Diagnostic query. Most tools focus on tracking, not diagnosis.
Commercial intent: Very high—someone with a problem is ready to pay for a solution.
Competitive presence: Low—few tools create diagnostic content.
11. "How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my product?"
Why it's a gap: Goal-oriented. Most tools show you where you appear, but don't tell you how to get there.
Commercial intent: High—goal-oriented queries indicate purchase intent.
Competitive presence: Medium—some optimization content exists, but not enough.
12. "Why am I not getting cited by AI search engines?"
Why it's a gap: Problem identification. Most tools assume you already know you have a problem.
Commercial intent: High—someone identifying a problem is evaluating solutions.
Competitive presence: Low—few tools help people identify the problem.
Category 5: Technical Queries
13. "How do I set up AI traffic detection in 5 minutes?"
Why it's a gap: Implementation-focused. Most tools focus on features, not quick setup.
Commercial intent: High—someone asking "how do I set up" is ready to implement.
Competitive presence: Low—few tools create quick-start content.
14. "What schema markup do I need for AI visibility?"
Why it's a gap: Technical, specific. Most tools don't provide technical implementation guides.
Commercial intent: Medium—technical queries indicate serious evaluation.
Competitive presence: Low—few tools create technical content.
15. "How do I measure AI search visibility ROI?"
Why it's a gap: Measurement-focused. Most tools show data but don't help you measure ROI.
Commercial intent: High—someone asking about ROI is evaluating business impact.
Competitive presence: Very low—almost nobody creates ROI measurement content.
Comparison: Where Competitors Appear vs. Don't Appear
| Query Category | Competitor Presence | Gap Opportunity | Commercial Intent |
|---|---|---|---|
| "AI visibility tools" | High (all competitors) | Low | Medium |
| "GEO tools" | High (all competitors) | Low | Medium |
| "How do I track ChatGPT traffic in GA4?" | Low (few competitors) | High | High |
| "Why is my direct traffic increasing?" | Very Low (none) | Very High | Very High |
| "How do I optimize for ChatGPT citations?" | Medium (some) | Medium | High |
| "What's the difference between AI traffic and direct traffic?" | Low (few) | High | Medium |
The pattern: Competitors appear for broad, high-competition queries. They don't appear for specific, high-intent queries. That's where the opportunity is.
How to Find Your Own Gap Queries
Method 1: Test competitor brand names
Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity:
- "What are the best [competitor] alternatives?"
- "How does [competitor] compare to [other competitor]?"
- "What's better than [competitor]?"
Document which queries competitors don't appear for.
Method 2: Analyze "People Also Ask"
For each competitor's main keyword, check Google's "People Also Ask" section. These are related queries that people actually ask. Test which ones competitors don't appear for.
Method 3: Use Perplexity's suggested queries
When you search Perplexity, it suggests related queries. Test these queries and see which ones competitors don't appear for.
Method 4: Analyze Reddit and forums
Search Reddit and forums for questions people ask about your category. These are conversational queries that AI systems are trained on. Test which ones competitors don't appear for.
Method 5: Use Loamly's competitive analysis
I built Loamly to do this automatically. It shows you which queries competitors appear for versus where they don't. This saves hours of manual research.
Prioritizing Gap Queries: A Framework
Not all gap queries are equal. Here's how to prioritize:
High priority (do these first):
- High commercial intent (people searching are ready to buy)
- Low competitive presence (competitors don't appear)
- Matches your value proposition (your product actually solves this)
- High search volume (enough people ask this)
Medium priority (do these second):
- Medium commercial intent
- Medium competitive presence
- Partially matches your value proposition
- Medium search volume
Low priority (do these last):
- Low commercial intent
- High competitive presence
- Doesn't match your value proposition
- Low search volume
My approach: I prioritized the 15 queries above based on commercial intent and competitive presence. I created content for all 15, but I focused on the high-priority ones first (queries 1, 2, 3, 10, 11).
The Results: What Happened When I Targeted Gaps
After 6 weeks of optimizing for gap queries:
Before (optimizing for competitive queries):
- Appeared in ChatGPT for 2 queries
- Appeared in Perplexity for 3 queries
- GEO Score: 45/100
After (optimizing for gap queries):
- Appeared in ChatGPT for 12 queries
- Appeared in Perplexity for 18 queries
- GEO Score: 78/100
The traffic impact:
- AI-sourced traffic increased 340% in 6 weeks
- Conversion rate from AI traffic: 8.5% (vs 2.3% for traditional search)
- 5 new paying customers came directly from gap query optimization
The lesson: Optimizing for gap queries is 10x more effective than optimizing for competitive queries. You get more visibility, more traffic, and more customers.
The Strategic Advantage
Targeting gap queries creates a strategic advantage:
1. First-mover advantage
When you optimize for queries competitors aren't targeting, you establish dominance before they realize the opportunity exists.
2. Lower competition
Gap queries have lower competition, so you can rank faster and with less effort.
3. Higher conversion rates
Gap queries often have higher commercial intent, so they convert better.
4. Sustainable advantage
Once you establish visibility for gap queries, competitors will struggle to catch up because AI systems build trust networks that compound over time.
The bottom line: Don't compete where competitors are strong. Compete where they're weak. Gap queries are your best opportunity for rapid visibility establishment.
