It's not about your website

When someone asks ChatGPT or Perplexity for a product recommendation, the AI doesn't just look at your website. It consults dozens of sources: review sites, listicles, industry publications, Wikipedia, directories. Then it synthesizes all of that into a recommendation.

The majority of what drives an AI recommendation comes from what other sources say about you, not what your own site says. This is the fundamental shift from traditional SEO: you can have a perfect website and still be invisible to AI.

Two systems, one recommendation

Every AI platform has two systems working together. One draws on what it learned during training (frozen knowledge from months ago). The other searches the web in real time. When both systems agree on a brand, that brand gets recommended strongly. When they disagree, the brand might get mentioned but not recommended.

Most companies are strong in one system and invisible in the other. Figuring out which one is broken is the first step to fixing it.

Why this matters now

AI traffic grew 4,700% year-over-year for e-commerce sites (Adobe, 2025). AI visitors convert at 3x the rate of organic search (Microsoft Clarity, 2025). Conductor's analysis of 3.3 billion sessions found AI traffic reaches 64% for some sites.

More importantly: Rand Fishkin's 600-person study proved that while AI brand lists are random on any single query, visibility rates are highly consistent. The brands that appear today still appear 73% of the time months later. New entrants break through only 12% of the time.

Positions are hardening. The window to establish your brand in AI recommendations is open now, but it won't stay open.
