Short answer: Yes, ChatGPT absolutely sends traffic to websites.

But here's what most people get wrong: they think ChatGPT traffic is minimal or hypothetical. The data tells a different story. And 80%+ of it is invisible to your analytics.

Update Feb 2026: Real ChatGPT Traffic From Our Database

I now have hard numbers. Across 446,405 visits in the Loamly database:

PlatformTotal VisitsUnique VisitorsCryptographically Verified
ChatGPT8,8743,578100 (RFC 9421 Ed25519)
Perplexity5222470
Claude4531400
Gemini220

ChatGPT dominates AI referral traffic. It sends 17x more visits than Perplexity and 20x more than Claude.

vs 2.46% for non-AI traffic (4.1x higher)

Invisible to GA4
80%+

Dark AI visits with no referrer header

But here is the critical detail: only 100 out of 8,874 ChatGPT visits had cryptographic signatures (RFC 9421 proof). The rest arrived through the mobile app, web UI clicks, or API integrations that strip referrer headers. GA4 would classify the majority as "Direct."

Across all AI platforms in our data, 14,413 visits arrived with no referrer header at all. These "dark AI" visits convert at 10.21% transactional rate vs 2.46% for non-AI traffic. That is 4.1x higher conversion, completely invisible in GA4.

Conductor's February 2026 report confirms this at scale: ChatGPT accounts for 87.4% of all AI referral traffic across 3.3 billion data points. The question is no longer whether ChatGPT sends traffic. It's whether you can measure what it sends.

In February 2026, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Agent mode (autonomous web browsing) and Instant Checkout (in-chat purchases). These features change the traffic equation: ChatGPT isn't just sending visitors anymore; it's sending agents that navigate, fill forms, and buy.

The Proof: Industry Research

Industry research confirms AI traffic is growing rapidly across all sectors:

These aren't projections. This is actual traffic data from industry research published in 2025-2026.

How ChatGPT Sends Traffic

ChatGPT sends traffic through three main channels:

When a user asks "What's the best CRM for startups?", ChatGPT often includes links:

"For startups, I'd recommend checking out HubSpot for a free tier, or Pipedrive for sales-focused teams..."

These are direct referral links that show up as chatgpt.com in your analytics.

2. ChatGPT Operator (Agentic Browsing)

Released in 2025, ChatGPT Operator can browse websites on behalf of users:

  • User: "Find me a hotel in Paris under $200/night"
  • Operator: Browses Booking.com, checks prices, makes reservations

This traffic is harder to detect because it uses headless browsing, but Loamly tracks it with cryptographic verification.

OpenAI's search product directly competes with Google. When users search, ChatGPT shows:

  • AI-generated answers
  • Source links with citations
  • "Visit site" buttons

Why AI Traffic Converts Better

In our data, dark AI traffic has a 10.21% transactional rate compared to 2.46% for non-AI traffic. Microsoft Clarity research found AI traffic converts at 3x the rate of other channels across 1,200+ publisher websites.

Why? Intent qualification.

When someone asks ChatGPT "What's the best project management tool for remote teams?", they've already:

  1. Defined their problem
  2. Specified their requirements
  3. Asked for a recommendation

By the time they click through to your site, they're ready to evaluate—not just browse.

What Determines If ChatGPT Recommends You?

ChatGPT's recommendations are influenced by:

1. Training Data (Pre-2023)

ChatGPT's base knowledge includes web content up to its training cutoff. Brands with strong SEO presence before 2023 have an advantage.

For current queries, ChatGPT uses Bing search. Your traditional SEO still matters.

3. GEO Signals (New)

Generative Engine Optimization signals affect AI recommendations:

  • Structured data (Schema.org markup)
  • E-E-A-T signals (author credentials, citations)
  • Content quality (factual, citation-worthy content)
  • Technical access (allowing AI crawlers)

How to Check If ChatGPT Recommends You

There are two ways:

Manual Check (Free)

Ask ChatGPT directly:

  • "What are the best [your category] tools?"
  • "Compare [your brand] vs [competitor]"
  • "Is [your brand] good for [use case]?"

Automated Monitoring (Loamly)

Use our free AI visibility check to see:

  • How often ChatGPT mentions you
  • What it says about you vs competitors
  • Your AI visibility score
  • Specific recommendations to improve

Real Examples of ChatGPT Traffic

Here are anonymized examples from Loamly customers:

SaaS Company (Project Management)

  • Discovery: AI visitors had 3x higher trial conversion rate

E-commerce (Outdoor Gear)

  • Before tracking: No idea ChatGPT mentioned them
  • After Loamly: Found 847 AI-sourced visits/month
  • Impact: Created AI-optimized product pages, saw 2.3x increase

Agency (Digital Marketing)

  • Problem: Competitors were recommended, they weren't
  • Solution: Added FAQ schema, author bios, case studies
  • Result: Started appearing in ChatGPT recommendations within 30 days

FAQ

How do I know if my traffic is from ChatGPT?

In Google Analytics, check for chatgpt.com or chat.openai.com referrers. But this misses 80%+ of AI traffic (mobile app, Operator, API). Use Loamly for accurate detection.

Is ChatGPT traffic worth optimizing for?

Yes. In our data, ChatGPT sends 8,874 visits across our customer base. AI traffic converts at 4.1x the rate of non-AI traffic. And ChatGPT has 900M+ weekly users, growing fast.

Can I control what ChatGPT says about my brand?

Partially. You can't edit ChatGPT's training data, but you can:

  • Optimize for GEO signals
  • Create factual, citation-worthy content
  • Ensure your site is crawlable by AI
  • Build E-E-A-T signals

How long until I see results?

Quick wins (schema, robots.txt) can show visibility improvements in 2-4 weeks. Strategic improvements typically show measurable citation increases in 60-90 days.
