You can start tracking AI traffic to your website in about 5 minutes. No code changes, no developer required.

This guide gives you two options: the quick GA4 setup (free, manual), and the Loamly approach (automated, includes brand monitoring). Choose based on your needs.

Option 1: GA4 Custom Channel (5 Minutes, Free)

If you're already using Google Analytics 4, this is the fastest path.

Step 1: Open Channel Groups

  1. Log into GA4
  2. Click the gear icon (Admin) in the bottom left
  3. Under "Data display", click Channel groups
  4. Click Copy to create new to duplicate the default channel grouping

Step 2: Create the AI Traffic Channel

  1. Name your new group something like "Default + AI"
  2. Click Add new channel
  3. Name it "AI Traffic"
  4. Set the rule:
    • Dimension: Session source
    • Match type: matches regex
    • Value: (copy this exactly)
.*chatgpt.*|.*openai.*|.*perplexity.*|.*claude.*|.*gemini.*google.*|.*copilot.*|.*bing.*chat.*

Step 3: Position It Correctly

Drag your new "AI Traffic" channel above the "Referral" channel in the list.

GA4 assigns traffic to the first matching rule. If Referral comes before AI Traffic, your AI visitors get classified as generic referrals.

Step 4: Save and Verify

Save the channel group.

To verify it's working:

  1. Go to Reports → Acquisition → Traffic Acquisition
  2. Change the primary dimension to your new channel group
  3. Look for "AI Traffic" as a distinct row

Note: This applies retroactively to historical data. You'll immediately see past AI traffic, not just future visits.

What This Setup Catches (and Misses)

Catches:

  • Perplexity referrals (80-90% reliability)
  • Gemini referrals when headers are passed (60-70% reliability)
  • Claude referrals (60-70% reliability)
  • ChatGPT referrals when users click directly (30-40% reliability)

Misses:

  • ChatGPT copy-paste traffic (appears as Direct)
  • AI traffic from mobile apps that strip referrer headers
  • AI Overviews traffic (mixed with regular Google organic)

This setup gives you partial visibility. For ChatGPT specifically, you're probably seeing 30-40% of actual traffic—the rest shows up as "Direct" because users copy-paste URLs rather than clicking links.

Option 2: Loamly Setup (10 Minutes, Full Detection)

If you want comprehensive AI traffic detection plus brand monitoring, here's the Loamly approach.

Step 1: Sign Up

Go to loamly.ai and create a free account. No credit card required.

Step 2: Add Your Domain

Enter your website domain during onboarding. We'll automatically start analyzing how AI platforms perceive your brand.

Step 3: Install the Tracker (Optional)

For traffic detection, add our lightweight script to your site:

<script defer src="https://cdn.loamly.ai/tracker.js" data-site="YOUR-SITE-ID"></script>

The script is under 1KB, cookie-free, and doesn't slow down your site.

If you're using Cloudflare, we have a one-click Worker installation that takes 2 minutes.

What You Get

Immediate (no tracker needed):

  • GEO Score showing your overall AI visibility health
  • Brand perception analysis across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity
  • Competitor visibility comparison
  • Improvement recommendations

With tracker installed:

  • AI traffic detection across all platforms
  • Behavioral analysis to catch hidden ChatGPT traffic
  • Conversion attribution for AI-referred visitors
  • Historical trends over time

Quick Wins After Setup

Once you're tracking AI traffic, here are immediate things to check:

Check Your Current AI Traffic

Look at the last 30 days. How much traffic are you getting from AI sources? For most sites, it's 0.5-2% of total traffic. If you're seeing less, there's likely optimization opportunity.

Identify Top AI Landing Pages

Which pages get the most AI referrals? These are pages that AI platforms are already citing. They're worth optimizing further for AI visibility.

Compare Engagement Metrics

AI-referred users typically:

  • Stay 2x longer than organic search visitors
  • Bounce less frequently
  • Convert at higher rates

If your AI traffic shows these patterns, it validates that AI referrals are high-quality visitors worth cultivating.

Look for Suspicious Direct Traffic

Filter your Direct traffic for:

  • New users only
  • Session duration over 3 minutes
  • Landing pages that are informational (blog posts, guides, FAQs)

This segment likely includes hidden ChatGPT traffic. Compare its behavior to confirmed AI traffic—similar patterns suggest AI origin.

Common Setup Mistakes

Mistake 1: Putting AI Traffic channel below Referral

GA4 uses first-match logic. If Referral comes before AI Traffic in your channel list, AI visitors get classified as Referral instead of AI Traffic. Always drag AI Traffic above Referral.

Mistake 2: Forgetting the Gemini pattern

Simple patterns like .*gemini.* miss traffic from gemini.google.com. Use .*gemini.*google.* to catch it correctly.

Mistake 3: Assuming all ChatGPT traffic is visible

The copy-paste problem means most ChatGPT traffic shows as Direct. Don't assume your referrer-based tracking captures everything.

Mistake 4: Not checking retroactive data

Custom channel groups in GA4 apply to historical data. After setup, look at past months to establish baselines and identify trends.

What to Do Next

If AI traffic is negligible (under 0.5%): Your content probably isn't appearing in AI responses. Run a free check at loamly.ai/check to see how AI platforms currently perceive your brand and get specific recommendations.

If AI traffic is present (0.5-2%): You're already being cited. Focus on optimization—improving the pages that are working and expanding to related content.

If AI traffic is significant (over 2%): You're ahead of most. Invest in monitoring and competitive analysis to maintain your position as AI discovery grows.
